Holiday Greetings

Happy Holidays!

I’ll begin this holiday greeting by apologizing for cheating you all out of a printed Christmas card this year. Especially because opening holiday cards and hanging them up is one of my favorite traditions and I may or may not still have all of yours from the past four years in a storage box because recycling them would destroy the memories and I refuse to be a memory destroyer.

Truth is until I got a puppy, I never deemed anything worthy enough of placing on my holiday card. Sure, there was that one year I could have posed next to my Kitchen-Aide, covered in flour and looking war-torn after three days straight of holiday baking. Or the party photos filled with felt antlers and Santa-appliqued sweatshirts from the annual ugly Christmas sweater party, but nothing ever seemed right.

Fast-forward to this year and I am now acutely aware that we are soon-to-be a family of two and have zero photos of ourselves. So while we decided to wait until the New Year to send out cards, I couldn’t NOT spread glad tidings to you, electronically or otherwise. Because what is Christmas, if not a time to dress your pet up in a human-sized flannel and make him pose for you in front of the tree. A Christmas wish

Dear Santa,
This is Finnegan Murphy here. You may not have our new address because my family moved to a place where there is no snow in the wintertime.

If anyone will understand my situation it’s you. I’m a Swiss MOUNTAIN dog for goodness sake. I live for snow. I like to pounce in the snow, eat snow, freeze my paws in the snow (not the salty sidewalk just the snow) stick my nose in the snow and eat the snow. All of it.

There’s no snow here. None. I’ve tried to eat that grainy stuff by the water but it’s not the same. Trust me. So you’ll forgive me if I’m having a hard time finding my holiday spirit this year.

I’ve been waiting patiently for winter to come since we made that super long car ride, but it’s still warm here. Sure there are weird inflatable creatures that I’m not allowed to play with in everyone’s yard but did I mention there’s no snow? What’s a guy to do without the one thing he loves more than his mom and dad? And peanut butter. And car rides. And naps.

greater swiss mountain dog, puppy, finn, swissy, gsmd, dog,

On January 9th I turn two and a half. My mom and dad seem to think I’m much older than that because they keep leaving me for long (and short) periods of time without supervision. Crazy, right? I still need them. Like must be touching them at all times to keep them from touching each other need them.

greater swiss mountain dog, puppy, finn, swissy, gsmd, dog,

So I’ve been trying my best to show them how much I miss them by displacing items they love from their permanent locations while they are gone. What kind of things you might ask? Well anything that they will notice obviously. So there’s a couple holes in mom’s favorite t-shirt. Dad has plenty of koozies in the drawer so he won’t miss it if I just eat one of them. LL Bean sends a catalog at least once a week anyways. Come to think of it mom did seem particularly upset when I learned how to open drawers and moved her DSLR camera from the island to the kitchen floor so you may want to bring her something nice this year to make up for that. My bad.

I know they love me. I can tell because they leave food out for me while they’re at work, Santa! They hang the bananas up so high on the counter I really have to stretch to get to them and end up knocking other stuff over in the process, but it’s totally worth it. I love bananas, peel and all. Just like I love snow. And naps. And peanut butter…

Anyways. I guess if I had one wish this Christmas it would be for my mom and dad to lose their jobs so they could stay home with me all day long.

Too harsh?

Ok what if you help them win the Lotto?

Too much?

Fine. If I can’t have any of that I will just ask for a few toys that will wear my brain out so I can take more naps. Stuff like this.

Or this.

And just one more thing as you evaluate your lists this year, Santa. I’m sure you’ve noticed that mom and dad brought a giant tree into our house and I’m not even allowed to pee on it? What’s up with that?

My dog ate my scarf

Happy Friday!

I know you probably don’t need a post to lift your spirits on a Friday because well, it’s Friday for goodness sake, but in case you do, know that your Friday is off to a better start that Finn and I’s.

Why you might ask? Well on Wednesday, this sweet-looking dog…

Ate this well-traveled scarf.

Mostly used for dog walks and trips to the gym as of late, this scarf had seen it all. There we are together just after Jake was born. And on the right is the time we navigated NYC in the freezing rain. We had some good times, my goes-with-everything-scarf and I. Perhaps that’s why Finn decided it’s time had come this week?

Such a sweetheart, my dog, to leave me a 1 foot-by-six-inch piece of my scarf to show me just how busy he had been that day. He even left me a clean line so I’d have no clue whether he shredded it or ate all 3-plus feet of it in big pieces.

So I’ve been dealing with the ramifications of trusting a 1-year and 8-month-old pup at home alone and Finn has been dealing with a very full belly for the past couple of days.

I am relieved, grossed out and happy to report that most of the scarf is now out and per usual, Finn seems to be showing no remorse for his actions. What a proud moment when I dropped him off at daycare today and was told that this is the first time they’ve ever heard of a dog eating a scarf in all of their years.

I guess if you’re going to be good at something, you might as well be great at it!

Have a good weekend. I’m excited race season is starting back up! If you’re running this weekend, you must check out this post. It’s pretty spot-on.

A dog was here: Week 3

Finn spent most of his weekend socializing with his friends in the neighborhood. The weather finally warmed up enough yesterday for us to get out and play so I took him over to a new dog park to see what all the hype was about.

K2 dog park, chicago, west loop,

First of all let me explain that the dog park by my place is about 1/10th the size of this one and entirely cement. It’s a great park don’t get me wrong, but you don’t see anything of this size or quality in the city. Imagine both of our surprises when we saw nearly an acre of grass nestled in the Fulton River district and at our disposal.

Once we got a few sprints out of the way, Finn decided to introduce this park to his latest game of playing lion as other dogs in the park became is unsuspecting gazelles. Here’s how it goes down:

The lion crouches in the distance as the gazelles enter the area to play with one another. Just as they are through the gate, the lion strikes at full sprint, scaring the crap out of both the gazelle and his human friend. Instead of going in for the kill, the lion then turns on his heels as soon as he is confronted and retreats back to his perch to rest. He repeats his scare tactic each time a new gazelle enters the area.

It figures I’d get a lion than is scared of the gazelles.

But I digress. We’re here for another week of a dog was here and though are space be little, Finn has no problem spreading his toys for all to enjoy.

No we aren’t gator fans. Yes the ball takes approximately 5 minutes to re-inflate because there are so many punctures in it at this point.

No it should not reside on the coffee table.

As always, I’d love for you to join me in sharing your photos documenting your pet and the traces they leave behind. Like Finn’s cousin Charlie for example, who destroyed a CD and a chip clip last week for dessert.

Charlie’s mom takes amazing photos of just about everything. Check out her Facebook page, Caitlin Lisa Photography, if you are interested in having yourself or your pet photographed this spring.

Have a great week!

A dog was here: Week 2

Thanks for coming back for week two of a dog was here, a photography series. I’d like to thank everyone for their submissions over the past week. And by everyone I mean my dad who alone has submitted enough entries to create a hybrid series I’m calling: Murfdog was here.

a dog was here photography series, murf

In this series, Murf documents his life of transporting iced coffee in Dasani water bottles, sporadic placement of plastic straws and things Finn destroyed when he stayed with them, including my dad’s prized robe.

I’m starting to think that this series my have more legs than the dog one, pun intended.

Regardless we’re back for week two of a dog was here.
