The votes are in

And apparently you like my random musings. According to my content poll, many of you prefer random musings and the method in which I determine my blog content (which is basically whatever pops into my head) so I’m just going to do as you say and keep on keepin on. Feel free to comment below if you have a content suggestion as I am still accepting write-in votes.

Sometimes I like to dig into the analytics behind the blog to see how people are finding me. Yeah, sure there are probably hundreds of robots trolling for keywords across the interwebs but I like to believe that it took a real person to find the blog via a search for ‘mermaids santa and snowman on siesta key’ or ‘christmas goblins eating santa’s cookies.’ In fact I’d really like to meet said person. The mermaid one not the Christmas goblin of course.

So if you get nutty over web analytics like I do then you might be interested in knowing that 2,000 or so of you really liked searching for ‘winter ONEderland’ parties in January. Thanks snow! And Pinterest! The cute baby probably helps them once they get to the page too. Thanks Trista! And Paul!

Some handful of you were in search of a ‘blue layered Frozen cake.’ No Frozen branding intended while making this cake but I bet Elsa wouldn’t have let a slice of this go. I know I didn’t and I can thank a few extra miles for getting back on track after that celebration.

And let’s not forget about the lone soldier who apparently needed a few good ‘Smuckers Willard Scott photos.’ Because really, who doesn’t need a good Willard Scott photo?

So let’s make a deal. I’ll continue to provide you random musings like this post as well as a few more wedding rants (I’m looking at you registry) and the occasional photo dump (coming soon) and recipe post (maybe after the wedding), if you promise to continue to provide me with keyword searches like ‘indy 500 tutus’ and ‘dimples in 62 year old butt’ that somehow lead you to my blog.

Because what is a blog if not to give people what they’re searching for?

BONUS: Here is a collage of photos of my mom and Finn being besties at the dog beach yesterday.

Doing more with less

This year I’ve decided to keep my resolutions simple. Less of an attempt to reach specific goals and more of an attempt to give more of myself to those around me.

More eye contact
Less technology

More recipes
Fewer restaurants

More risks
Less fear

More sweat
Fewer excuses

More focus
Less multitasking

More dog walks
Fewer distractions

More love
Less contentment

More miles
Less time

More exploration
Less complacency

More faith
Less doubt

More water.
Less wine 😉

Here’s to another great year!

Holiday Greetings

Happy Holidays!

I’ll begin this holiday greeting by apologizing for cheating you all out of a printed Christmas card this year. Especially because opening holiday cards and hanging them up is one of my favorite traditions and I may or may not still have all of yours from the past four years in a storage box because recycling them would destroy the memories and I refuse to be a memory destroyer.

Truth is until I got a puppy, I never deemed anything worthy enough of placing on my holiday card. Sure, there was that one year I could have posed next to my Kitchen-Aide, covered in flour and looking war-torn after three days straight of holiday baking. Or the party photos filled with felt antlers and Santa-appliqued sweatshirts from the annual ugly Christmas sweater party, but nothing ever seemed right.

Fast-forward to this year and I am now acutely aware that we are soon-to-be a family of two and have zero photos of ourselves. So while we decided to wait until the New Year to send out cards, I couldn’t NOT spread glad tidings to you, electronically or otherwise. Because what is Christmas, if not a time to dress your pet up in a human-sized flannel and make him pose for you in front of the tree. For the love of bridal mags

One of the perks of being newly engaged is receiving a plethora of bridal magazines to kick off your planning process. Oh sure there is that whole formal establishment of your life partner and all but you and I both know that all anyone cares about are the details. And they seem to take serious concern in them immediately after finding out you are engaged.

Congratulations! Are you going to have a swan-shaped ice luge? My sister’s husband’s cousin’s step-mother says you have to have a swan-shaped ice luge.

In less than a month I’ve already been asked what my dress looks like, who’s doing the food and when and where we are honeymooning. And those are the general questions.

But it’s not the inquiring minds that make you feel like you are behind the wedding planning 8-ball. It’s the bridal mags. So here are 5 ways I’m already failing at wedding planning according to bridal magazines:

5 ways I'm failing at wedding planning, wedding, bridal magazines, bride, wedding planning tips

1. I’m not wearing a “naked” dress. Apparently strategically placed lace appliques are all the rage for 2015. Speaking of rage, should we discuss the wrath that might come should a girl show up to a Catholic wedding baring way more than just her shoulders? I can’t even.

2. I didn’t shop for my engagement ring via a bridal magazine. Do people do this? Why else would these magazines be filled with pages and pages of engagement rings when technically you should already be engaged before flipping through one? Isn’t there some sort of anti-marriage karma that comes to you if you page before proposal? And if not, should I be purchasing an issue of Pregnancy or AARP now just so I know what I’m in for?

3. I was behind schedule before I even started. If we’re following the bridal mags, we should only have a few more things to wrap up before the wedding in six months. The dress should be ordered, all vendors booked and we can just sit back and finalize seating charts until the day comes along. Did I mention that we just had an engagement party last weekend?

And no, I do not in fact have a single picture of my future husband and I from the evening. We spent most of the time in different rooms catching up with all of our friends and family. Call it a trial run for the big day.

4. Speaking of timelines, Matt’s a little behind too. Who’s going to be the one to tell him he’s a whopping 2 months behind on getting fit for the wedding day? No better time to completely transform your body than now fellas. Be sure to give her a good starting point so you both can see the rapid decline once your sealed for life.

5. I didn’t plan on recreating my living room at our reception. Sweetheart, put your beer down and come join me on the couch for a quick photo. Oh go ahead and put that horse head on while you’re at it. Perfect. Say cheese!

Note: Should you witness something similar on our wedding day, please forget you saw this as I’m realizing not everything the bridal magazines include are completely out of the realm.

Until next time!

What music do mummies listen too?

Wrap Music.

This Halloween joke was brought to you by Brent J. from Upper Arlington, Ohio

Thanks Brent!

I apologize for my blog infrequency but you know I’m not one to miss a holiday so it’s only fitting that I bring it back for one of my favorites.

I love Halloween. I would say it’s my favorite holiday but I say that about every holiday so I doubt you would believe me if I did.

Halloween is totally my favorite holiday.

I’m the kind of girl who gets into the spirit by making an entire batch of chocolate covered pretzels 7 days ago only to find out that Halloween was not for another week.

Speaking of spirits.

Why do ghosts make good cheerleaders?

Because they have a lot of spirit.

I found these googlie eyes a few weeks back and couldn’t get the idea of googlie-eyed ghosts out of my head ever since.

If you were ever wondering where I get ideas for things to make, the above statement about sums it up. There’s really no planning involved. An idea comes out of nearly nowhere and once it’s in my head I can’t get rid of it until the sugar cookie dough has set, the royal icing has been mixed and the googlie eyes placed. It’s a blessing and a curse really.

I won’t get into the recipes as I broke them down in this post, but just know that if you want a soft and chewy royally-iced goblin, you are going to need a few hours of outlining time.

And outlining time takes away from what the heck are we going to dress up as this year time so I’m off to figure that out.

What do you call a ghost’s mother and father?

Transparents.

Dunk tanks and Explosives

This weekend I flew home to celebrate my nephew’s 8th birthday, complete with a mix of water sports, explosives and cotton candy. I know what you’re thinking. What else could a bunch of 8 year-old boys want, right?

Right.

I can take little to no credit for the party or the details because my sister handled it all herself. Perks of moving thousands of miles away I guess. Since Owen’s birthday falls just after the holiday, he’s chosen to celebrate it outside shooting water at his friends for the past several years. And this year was no different, except that he decided he wanted it to be Fourth of July-themed as well. Talk about a practical kid!

My sister rented a cotton candy machine and a dunk tank. We held the entire party outside in my parent’s backyard and sprinkled in a few kid-friendly fireworks, complete with a Jake-led water gun crew to put out the flames once the show was over. These boys are all on a baseball team together so it was the perfect mix of sports and sugar.
